ROBERT (DE UMFREVILLE), EARL OF ANGUS, and LORD UMFREVILLE, 2nd but 1stsurviving son and heir; aged 30 and more at his father's death. He didhomage and had livery of his father's lands 6 November 1307; summoned 18January 1307/8 to attend the coronation of Edward II, and by that Kingwas appointed Joint King's Lieutenant and Keeper of Scotland 21 June1308, Joint Guardian between Berwick and the Forth 16 August 1308, and aCommisioner to treat with the Scots 14 November 1308, 16 February1309/10, 22 February 1315/16, and 18 March 1317/18; summoned toParliament from 19 January 1307/8 to 26 December 1323 by writs directedRoberto de Umframvill comiti de Anegos. He m., 1stly, before 20 Sep1303, Lucy, daughter and in her issue heir of Sir Philip de Kyme (1stLord Kyme), by Joan, daughter of Sir Hugh le Bigod, Chief Justiciar ofEngland. He m. 2ndly, Alienor. He d. Mar 1325, and was buried in theAbbey of Newminster. Dower was assigned to his widow 10 and 19 July1325. She m., before 16 Aug 1327 (at which date he was fined 10 marksand had pardon for marrying her without license) Sir Roger Mauduit, ofEshot, Northumberland, sometime Chamberlain of Scotland, who d. before 24Feb 1350/1. Robert de Umfravill, second Earl of Angus and feudal baron of Prudhoe,was summoned to parliament as Earl of Angus from 4 March, 1309, to 30December, 1324. This nobleman distinguished himself in the lifetime ofhis father in the Scottish wars and, soon after his accession to thetitle, he was joined in commission with William, Lord Ros, of Hamlake,and Henry, Lord Beaumont, in the lieutenancy of Scotland. In the 11thEdward II [1318], his lordship was appointed one of the commissioners totreat with Robert de Brus and his partisans for a truce between bothrealms. The earl m. 1st, Lucy, dau. of Philip, and eventually heiress ofher brother, William de Kyme, by whom he had issue, Gilbert, hissuccessor; Elizabeth, m. to Gilbert Burdon, or Baradon, and had an onlydau. and heiress, Alianore Burdon, (heiress to her uncle, Earl Gilbert)m. to Henry Talboys, from which marriage the Lords Talboys descended. Hislordship's 2nd wife was named Alianore, but of what family is notmentioned; by this lady (who m. 2ndly, Roger Mauduit) he had issue,Robert (Sir), who d.s.p.; Thomas (Sir), of Harbottle Castle, m. Joane deRoddam, d. 1386, and left issue, Thomas (Sir), b. 1364, d. 1391, andRobert, K.G., d.s.p. 27 December, 1436; Annora, m. to Stephen Waleys, sonand heir of Sir Richard Waleys. The earl d. in 1325, and was s. by hiseldest son, Gilbert de Umfravill.
