He [Hugh de Dacre] married, between 8 October 1354 and 1 July 1355Elizabeth, widow of Sir William de Douglas, of Hermitage Castle inLiddesdale, sometime EARL, OF ATHOLL, (who was slain beside Galsewood inEttrick Forest, in August 1353 [f], and buried in Melrose Abbey),daughter, perhaps, of Sir John MAXWELL, of Carlaverock, co. Dumfries. Shedied before 1 January 1369/70. He died 24 December 1383, and was buriedin Lanercost Priory. [Complete Peerage IV:5-6, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)]

[f] By his kinsman, William, Earl of Douglas: the cause being jealousy,according to the ballad quoted by Hume of Godscroft:

"The Countess of Douglas out of her bour she came,
And loudly there that she did call,
'It is for the Lord of Liddisdale
That I let all these tears down fall.' "

Having entailed (under the style of"Dominus Vallis de Lydel"), on 3 Nov 1351, his lands of Liddesdale on thesons of his brother John Douglas, he dspm., in Aug 1353, beingassassinated by his kinsman, William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. Hiswidow Elizabeth m. between 8 Oct 1354 and 1 July 1355, Hugh (de Dacre),4th Lord Dacre, who d. 24 Dec 1383. She d. before 1 Jan 1369/70.[Complete Peerage, I:310, XIV:47]
