The following is excerpted from a post to SGM, 1 Feb 2004, by DouglasRichardson:
10. JOAN BEAUFORT, illegitimate daughter, born before 4 March 1392. Shemarried EDWARD STRADLING, Knt., of St. Donat's, Hawey, Coyty, etc.,Glamorgan, Wales, and Halsway and Comb Hay, Somerset, king's knight, chamberlain and receiver of South Wales, Sheriff of cos. Somerset andDorset, 1424, steward and receiver of Cantreselly and Penkelly, keeper ofCarmarthenshire and Cardiganshire, Constable of Taunton, Knight of theSepulchre, son and heir of William Stradling, Knt., of St. Donat's,Glamorgan, by Isabel, daughter and heiress of John Saint Barbe, of SouthBrent, Somerset. He was born about 1389 (aged 22 in 1411). They hadthree sons, Henry, Knt., John (clerk) [Archdeacon of Llandaff], andDavid, and one daughter, Katherine. He was heir in 1411 to hisgreat-uncle, Lawrence de Berkerolles, Knt., by which he inherited themanors of East Orchard, Llanphey, and Merthyr Mawr, Glamorgan. He foughtat the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 in the retinue of Humphrey, Duke ofGloucester. He and his wife, Joan, obtained a papal indult for aportable altar in 1423. Joan was a legatee in the 1447 will of herfather, Cardinal Henry Beaufort, who bequeathed her "two dozen dishes, four chargers, salt cellars, etc., & c li. in gold." She was living in1451/2. SIR EDWARD STRADLING died at Jerusalem shortly before 27 June1452. [Note: It is commonly assumed that Joan Beaufort was born out ofwedlock c. 1402 following the death of her mother Alice Arundel'shusband, John Cherleton, in 1401 (see, for example, K.B. McFarlaneEngland in the Fifteenth Century (1981): 135, footnote 113; G.L. HarrissCardinal Beaufort (1988): 16). The Wynston pedigree cited below andVincent upon Brooke: 27 both assert Joan was born before her father,Henry Beaufort, took holy orders. If correct, then Joan was presumablyborn before 4 March 1392, when her mother, Alice, was known to be thewife of John Cherleton, 4th Lord Cherleton (see McFarlane, ibid., pg.135; C.P. 3 (1913): 161 (sub Cherleton) and before 7 April 1397 whenCardinal Beaufort took deacon's orders (see Harriss, ibid., pg. 8)].
NOTE: As to Joan's birth place: it must have been while Henry Beaufortwas at Queen's College, Oxford 1390-3. Of course that may not have beenwhere Joan was born; that may well have been at her mother Alice's homeof Arundel, Sussex.
