Notes about Sir Hugh Mortimer , of Mortimer's Hall

Hugh Mortimer of Mortimer's Hall, co. Hants, by Eleanor, daughter of JohnCornwall. [Ancestral Roots]

Note: As near as can be determined Mortimer's Hall is in StratfieldMortimer, which is in Berkshire very near the border with Hampshire. Partof the parish of Stratfield Mortimer does extend into Hampshire, so thisis perhaps what AR (as well as CP & BP) means. So far no otherMortimer's Hall has been found; www.streetmap.co.uk is the mapping systemwhich shows Mortimer Hall in Stratfield Mortimer, as pointed out by ChrisPhillips on SGM. The villages of Mortimer West End (Hampshire) andMortimer (Berkshire) are also nearby (within 3 kilometers).

The following is from an e-mail from Brice Claggit, referring to researchdone by Neil Thompson, a noted genealogist who CP XIV: 487-8, credits forthe article published in that volume on the Mortimers of Tedstone Wafer:

Here is the descent as Neil Thompson worked it out several years ago:

1. Sir Roger de Mortimer "le oncle," 1st Lord Mortimer of Chirk,1256?-1326; m. Lucy La Wafre, heiress of Tedstone Wafer, Herefordshire.Since Lord Mortimer was never attained, his descendants below were dejure Lords Mortimer of Chirk.

2. Roger de Mortimer, d. by 1333; of Tedstone Wafer; m. Juliane ____.

3. John de Mortimer, fl. 1333-36; of Tedstone Wafer.

4. John de Mortimer, fl. 1346-67; of Tedstone Wafer.

5. Roger de Mortimer, d. 1402; of Tedstone Wafer; m. Maud, dau. andheiress of Sir John Herle, of Kyre Wward (Cure) and Martley,Worcestershire.

6. Sir John Mortimer, 1388-1415; of Tedstone Wafer, Kyre Ward and Martley.

A, Sir Hugh Mortimer, of Kyre Ward and of Mortimer Hall, Hampshire; m.Eleanor Cornewall (d. 1520, aged almost 90), who m. (2) Sir Richard Croft(c. 1431-1509).

a. Sir John Mortimer, d. by 1504 (or: d. 1513); m. Margaret Neville, whom. (2) Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk. No issue.

b. Elizabeth Mortimer, fl. 1489-by 1525; de jure heiress of the baronyof Mortimer of Chirk; m. Thomas West, 8th Lord La Warre. Issue.

B. Roger Mortimer, of Burton, Little Sapey, Worcestershire.

a. Alyson Mortimer, heiress of Burton Sapey; m. Robert Browne. Issue.

Neil thought it possible, but unlikely, that nos. 3 and 4 above were thesame man.

Note: I have think that it was John #3 who brought suit in 1342, so wasliving then, while his son John presented to Tedstone in Apr 1347, andwas therefore of age at that date.
