Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, wife of King Louis XVI and daughter of Austrian Archduchess Maria Theresa and Holy Roman Emperor Francis I. She was married in 1770 to the dauphin, who became King in1774. Her marriage had been made to strengthen France's alliance with its long-time enemy, Austria. The union, however, was not altogether popular, and Marie Antoinette's actions only increased hostility toward her. Sheconstantly sought the advice of the Austrian ambassador and attempted toinfluence French foreign policy in favor of Austria. Unhappy in hermarriage, which remained unconsummated for seven years, she surroundedherself with a dissolute clique, led by Yolande de Polignac and MarieThérèse de Lamballe, and threw herself into a life of pleasure andcareless extravagance. Her notorious reputation led to scandals such asthe Affair of the Diamond Necklace and to rumors concerning her relationswith officers of the guard and with Hans Axel Fersen. The famous solutionto the bread famine, "Let them eat cake", is unjustly attributed to theQueen, but it is certain that Marie Antoinette lacked understanding ofeconomic problems. With the birth of her first son, her life became moresedate. Although she had contributed to the downfall of A. R. J. Turgotin 1776 and was hostile to Jacques Necker, her influence on the King'sdecisions during the first two years of the French Revolution in 1789 to1791 has been exaggerated. She was brought with the King from Versaillesto Paris in October of 1789 and was seized at Varennes when the royalfamily attempted to escape in 1791. Despite her hatred of the Revolution, the apathy of the King forced her to conduct negotiations first with theCount of Mirabeau, then with Antoine Barnave. Simultaneously, however, she secretly urged Austrian intervention; after war was declared, shefully identified the cause of the Bourbon dynasty with that of France. After the storming of the Tuileries palace in August of 1792, she and herhusband were removed to the Temple and accused of treason. The King wasexecuted in January of 1793. Marie Antoinette's son was taken from her,and she was transferred to the Conciergerie. Known derisively as the"Widow Capet", she was tried before the Revolutionary Tribunal on October14 and 15 of 1793, found guilty, and guillotined on October 16th. In herlast misfortunes she displayed steadfastness, courage, and dignity. Her portraits, notably by Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, are well known.
From Rootsweb:
As the queen consort of King Louis XVI of France, Marie Antoinette, b.Nov. 2, 1755, d. Oct. 16, 1793, aroused hostile passions that helped leadto the French Revolution and the abolition of the French monarchy inAugust 1792. The daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria and Holy RomanEmperor Francis I, she married Louis in 1770. By 1774, when her husbandbecame king, however, the beautiful, spirited Marie Antoinette hadwithdrawn from the restraints of French court etiquette and from hertimid, aloof husband to a life of innocent but frivolous pleasure. Sheenchanted her small circle of friends but created the image of anuntrustworthy foreigner and prodigal spendthrift opposed to the reformsproposed by the king's ministers. Her life became temporarily moredignified after the birth of her first son, Louis Joseph, in 1778, buther reputation worsened with the Affair of the Diamond Necklace (1785-86;see Diamond Necklace, Affair of the).
Popular hatred of her in 1789 obscured the fact that she advocated royalcompromise with the revolutionary States-General she disliked sointensely. Bravely suffering her family's forced move to Paris andvirtual imprisonment in the Tuileries from October 1789, she playedlittle part in her weaker husband's losing cause until initiating theirabortive attempt to flee the country in 1791 (the Flight to Varennes).Having secretly aided Austria's counterrevolutionary invasion of France,Marie Antoinette was executed by guillotine for treason.
