EARLDOM OF HUNTINGDON (XVII, 1) 1479 to 1491
WILLIAM (HERBERT), EARL OF PEMBROKE and LORD HERBERT, only son and heir,born circa 1455, was knighted September 1466. When Edward IV enteredLondon in triumph after Tewkesbury, 21 May 1471, he rode with Gloucesterand other lords at the head of the procession. On 27 August he was jointCommissioner of Array for South Wales and the Marches. On 29 August hehad licence to enter into the offices of Chief Justice and Chamberlain ofSouth Wales; and on 4 October 1475 to enter into all his manors, &c. Hetook part in the expedition to France in that year. In 1479 he resignedthe Earldom of Pembroke, and on 4 July 1479 he was created EARL OFHUNTINGDON, with remainder to the heirs of the body of his father. At theCoronation of Richard III, 6 July 1483, he bore the Queen's Sceptre. Hewas Chamberlain to the little Prince of Wales. He was appointed jointCommissioner of Array in Wales 5 November, and Chief Justice of SouthWales 15 November 1483. The charter creating him Earl of Huntingdon wasconfirmed 27 May 1484 and again 17 May 1488 with limitation to hisfather's heirs male of the body.
He married, 1stly, 20 January 1466/7, at Windsor, Mary, sister of theQueen Consort Elizabeth, and daughter of Richard (WYDEVILLE), 1st EARLRIVERS, by Jaqueline, daughter of Piers DE LUXEMBURG, COUNT OF ST. POL.He married, 2ndly, between 3 March and 29 September 1483/4, Katharine,illegitimate daughter of RICHARD III (a). He died s.p.m., 16 July 1491,and was buried at Tintern Abbey. On his death the Earldom of Huntingdonbecame extinct, but the Barony of Herbert, according to modern doctrine,devolved on his daughter and heir Elizabeth, who married, in 1492, SirCharles Somerset, who was created Earl of Worcester. (a) On 8 Mar 1484/5 an annuity was granted to the King's kinsman William,Earl of Huntingdon, and Katharine his wife, until they should have grantsto themselves and the heirs of their bodis of lordships, &c. to the samevalue. This proves that the marriage took place, which was doubted byDugdale and in the 1st edition of this work.
