--------------------

BARONY of BEAUCHAMP of Bletsoe (I)

Roger Beauchamp, of Bletsoe, co. Bedford, and of Lydirard Tregoz, Wilts, sometimes said to be a younger son of Giles Beauchamp (living 1346), sonof Walter Beauchamp, of Powick, co. Worcester, who was a younger son ofWilliam Beauchamp, of Elmley, by Isabel Mauduit, heiress of the Earls ofWarwick. He is described as King's Yeoman on 24 Apr 1337. Keeper ofDevizes Castle, granted to him be Queen Philippe as "her bachelor", 26Oct 1340. As early as 1346 he served in the French wars; was madeCAPTAIN OF CALAIS in 1372. He was summoned to Parliament from 1 Jun 1363to 20 Oct 1379, by writs directed Rogero de Bello Campo, whereby he maybe held to have become LORD BEAUCHAMP. He was Lord Chamberlain of theHousehold 1376-77.

He m., 1stly, before 1336/7 (on 6 Jan 1248/9 the manor of Lydiard Tregozwas confirmed to him and his wife), Sybil, 1st of the four sisters andcoheirs of Sir William PATSHULL, daughter of Sir John PATSHULL, ofBletsoe aforesaid, by Mabel, daughter and in her issue coheir of Williamde GRANDSON [LORD GRANDSON], of Lydiard Tregoz. She, who was living 26Oct 1351, was buried at the Blackfriars, London. Esch. 1359. He m.,2ndly, Margaret. He d. 3 Jan 1379/80. Will dated 19 Dec 1379, reg. atLincoln, directing his burial to be at the Blackfriars (ax). His 2ndwife survived him. [Complete Peerage II:44-45, XIV:75]

(ax) This will shows that his grandfather was Sir Walter Beauchamp.

Note: CP XIV:75 also added that Mabel was aged 20 and more at herfather's death, 27 Sep 1359; however the Corrections to CP website (asindicated below) states that she was well over that; so I did not put inthat correction from XIV.

-------------------

The following information copied from "Some corrections and additions tothe Complete Peerage: Volume 2: Beauchamp of Bletsoe", website, indicatesthat Giles is not the father of Roger:

As stated in Complete Peerage, volume 14, page 45, Roger's will refers tohis grandfather Sir Walter de Beauchamp [Sir N.H. Nicolas, TestamentaVetusta, p.103 (1826); A. Gibbons, Early Lincoln Wills..., p.29 (1888)].However, the following evidence shows that it is chronologicallyimpossible for Roger to have been a son of Giles.

At the inquisition taken in 1362 after Giles de Beauchamp's death, hisson and heir Sir John was said to be aged 23 years and more], implyingthat he was born about 1339 [Cal. Inq. p.m. vol.11, no 288]. Even if thisage is incorrect, it is clear that John could not have been born beforethe late 1320s. He was certainly the son of Katherine, the daughter ofJohn de Bures and his wife Hawise (Muscegros), as is clear from thedescent of the manor of Boddington, Gloucestershire [Victoria CountyHistory, Gloucestershire, vol.8, p.190]. Katherine's age was variouslygiven as 26 and more, 30 and more and 35 and more at the inquisitionstaken after her father's death in 1351 [Cal. Inq. p.m., vol.9, no 578],but in any case she must have been born after the death of her mother'sprevious husband John de Ferrers, about August 1312 [Complete Peerage,vol.5, p.309]. According to Complete Peerage, vol.2, p.46, note f, Gileswas married to Katherine in 1329; in this year, the manor of Boddingtonwas settled on the couple [Victoria County History, Gloucestershire,vol.8, p.190, citing CP 25(1)/286/35/34].

So it is clear that any younger son of Giles could not have be bornbefore the late 1320s at the earliest, and more likely would have be bornin the early 1330s.

On the other hand, there is ample evidence that Roger de Beauchamp wasactive by the mid-to-late 1330s. On 15 March 1336/7, he - described as aking's yeoman - and his wife Sibyl were granted a yearly allowance [Cal.Patent Rolls, 1334-38, p.394]; on 1 March 1337/8 he - again described asa king's yeoman - was granted for life the remainder of the manor ofBloxham, Oxfordshire [Cal. Fine Rolls, 1337-47, p.68] and on 25 October1340, as Sir Roger de Beauchamp, described as the queen's bachelor, wasgranted for life the keeping of her castle of Devizes [Cal. Patent Rolls,1340-43, p.115].

Sibyl was already bearing children at this point, as implied by apetition of Queen Philippa to the pope, on behalf of "her spiritual son",Philip de Bello Campo, son of Roger de Bello Campo, knight, granted 9March 1352/3, in which Philip is said to be in his fourteenth year [Cal.Papal Petitions, vol.1, p.239]. (A later petition of Philip deBellocampo, son of Roger de Bellocampo, baron, granted 11 August 1361,states that he was aged 23 [Cal. Papal Petitions, vol.1, p.374].)

[The chronological difficulty of placing Roger as a son of Giles waspointed out by Leslie Mahler in February 1998, Henry Sutliff in April1998 and Douglas Richardson in July 2000.]

Bedford, king's yeoman,Lord Chamberlain of the Household to King Edward III, Captain of Calais, younger son. He married (1st) before 15 Mar. 1337 SIBYL DE PATESHULLE,daughter of John de Pateshulle, Knt., of Patishall, co. Northampton,Bletsoe and Keysoe, co. Hiswidow died on or about 2 Oct. 1394.

Note [by Douglas Richardson]: Roger de Beauchamp is typically identifiedin print as the son of Giles de Beauchamp, Knt., of Alcester and Powick. This parentage is not possible, as Giles and Roger are known to have beencontemporaries to one another. Roger's will dated 1379 states that hewas "bound to do a service on the Infidels, by devise of my grandsire,Sir Walter Beauchamp, to the expense of 200 marks." [Reference: Nicolas,Testamenta Vetusta, 1 (1826): 103-104]. The name Walter de Beauchamp isevidently a scribal error. Rather, Roger's grandfather appears to havebeen William de Beauchamp, whose 1269 will left a bequest (or devise) of200 marks to his son, Walter, for the purpose of making a piligrimage[Reference: N.H. Nicolas, Testamenta Vestusta, 1 (1826): 50-51].Identifying Roger as Walter's son and William's grandson fits the knownchronology of this family. It also agrees with the 1566 Visitation ofBedfordshire cited below which records Roger as Walter's son andWilliam's grandson.
