William le Vavasour (ie. "the vassal", or "the sub-tenant"); witness to acharter c 1158-63; died after Michaelmas 1189 but before 29 Jun 1191.[Burke's Peerage]

VAVASOUR
Observations.-The family of Vavasour of Hazlewood, parish of Tadcaster,descends from Mauger, tenant in Yorkshire of both William de Percy and Ilbert de Lacy in 1086 (e). At an uncertain date, temp. Henry I, awitness to a charter of Alan de Percy, was named Mauger. [CompletePeerage XII/2:230, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(e) Mauger was tenant of William de Percy at Barnby-upon-Don, Cocksford,Edlington, Hazlewood, and Stutton, while he held Hessle, par. of Wragby,of Ilbert de Lacy. The word Vavasour means a vassal, or under-tenant.
WILLIAM LE VAVASOUR witnessed a charter, circa 1158-63, and he wasamerced in 1165-66, 1166-67 and 1175-76. In 1166 he held 2 knights' feesof William de Percy, 1/3 knight's fee of Henry de Lacy and ½ knight's feeof the Honor of Skipton. He was a custodian of the lands of theArchbishop of York, 1183-90, a Justice itinerant, 1184 and 1187-89,farmed the lands of William Paynel, 1185-88, and levied tallage, 1187-89.He was an adviser of Maud, Countess of Warwick.
