GILBERT TALBOT, heir and probably son, was a minor, 13 April 1234, whenhis wardship and marriage were granted to John de Monemuth, but washolding Linton and Credenhill, co Hereford, 1242-43. On 23 July 1254 hewas to have 6,000 quarrels to supply the castles of Grosmont, Skinfrithand White Castle. In 1255 he was bailiff of Prince Edward, and Justice ofChester; and from 1256 took a prominent part in the defence of themarches against Llewellyn, Prince of Wales. On 5 July 1258 he was givenletters of credence to the preceptor and brothers of the New Temple toexpound a secret business for the King. On 3 November 1258 he wasappointed to keep the county of Hereford, and in that year and until 1262was in commissions. By writ dated 27 March 1260 he was summoned forservice in London. On 15 May 1260 he was given the custody of the castlesof Grosmont, Skinfrith and White Castle, and on 24 December 1262 he wasdirected to fortify them, as also Monmouth Castle, against Llewellyn. In1262 he was keeper of the lands of Prince Edward. In 1263 he was summonedto be at Hereford with horses and arms on Monday after the Purification.He was granted a protection on 13 August 1265 until Easter following; andon 17 August 1268 was ordered, with others, to be at Montgomery, 14September, to settle matters relating to the peace with Llewellyn.
He married Gwenthlian, daughter and eventual heir (in her issue) of RhysMECHYLL, LORD OF DYNEVOR (b). He died shortly before 8 September 1274 andwas buried in Wormesley Priory, co. Hereford. M.I. [Complete PeerageXII/1:608-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
