He [John de Hastinges] married, 1stly, at Braxted, Essex, or Blunham,Beds, Isabel, daughter of William DE VALENCE, sometimes styled EARL OFPEMBROKE, by Joan, daughter of Sir Warin DE MUNCHANESY, of Swanscombe,Kent, Winfarthing and Gooderstone, Norfolk, &c. She died 5 October 1305,and was buried in Coventry Priory. [Complete Peerage VI:346-9, XIV:372,(transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Sister of Aymer de Valence; m. John de Hastings, lord of Abergavenny; on her bro.'s death, the title of Earl of Pembroke passed to this family, along with Pembroke Castle. It was Isabel's grandson Laurence who became the first Hastings Earl of Pembroke, succeeding to the title in 1325 at abt the age of 6. [Pembroke Castle, p. 10]
