JOHN LESTRANGE II, son and heir. In 1196/7 he acquired rights in land atKnockin, Salop, from his cousins, daughters of his uncle Guy. In 1198 hetook the place of his cousin Ralph, who was ill, in the King's servlce.In 1204 the King asked Llewelin, Prince of North Wales, to grant John asafe conduct to go to and return from him. In 1206 he had sent hisknights overseas. In 1212 he was concerned in the management of AlbumMonasterium; and was returned as holding the manors of Ness andCheswardine of the grift of King Henry II. In 1213 he was given thecustody of the castle of Carreghova; and in 1214 was sent to Llewelin toexact an oath to keep the truce. In 1216 the King committed to him thecounties of Staffs and Salop during pleasure, and directed that he was tobe treated as sheriff; and in the same year he was to have the manor ofKidderminster during pleasure. In March 1217/8 he was, with Hugh deMortimer and Henry de Audley, directed to give safe-conduct to theMagnates of North Wales, that they might do homage at Worcester; and inthe same month the sheriff of Staffs and Salop was directed to give himan aid from the counties for strengthening his castle at Knockin. On 7June 1218 he was present at the dedication of Worcester Cathedral. InJanuary 1223/4 he was granted a market at his manor of Hunstanton. On 29August 1226, as John Lestrange senior, he was granted a pardon for debtsand the vill of Wrockwardine for his maintenance during pleasure, for hisservices to the King and his father; and on 2 September he was appointedto sit with the Bishop of Hereford and others at Album Monasterium toaccept the surrender of lands by the Prince of North Wales. John le Strange, possessed the lordships of Nesse and Chesewurdine orCheswardine, in the 11th of King John (1210), which he had by gift fromHenry II, and also enjoyed the Manor of Wrockwurdine, which his brotherHamon formerly had. He was Governor of the Castle of Carracove in Walesand Sheriff of the County of Salop, and also the County of Stafford, andin the 3rd of Henry III (1216-1272) he obtained the King's precept foraid to rebuild part of his castle at Knockyn and to repair the rest ofit.
