    Benjamin H. Lamkin (or Lampkin) was born in North Carolina, possibly the son of Matthew Lamkin of Warren Co. Benjamin came to Gwinnett Co. as a young man by 1828, settling in Lawrenceville. There he resided for most of his life working as a house carpenter.

    Benjamin H. Lamkin served Gwinnett Co. in several capacities. He was a volunteer in a county militia unit about the Creek Indian War; he also served as an Inferior Court juror, as a road commissioner, and as a justice of the peace.

    On 22 October 1829, Benjamin married Permelia A. Niblack, who was from neighboring Jackson Co. The couple had a total of eight children:

    William Franklin Lamkin, who married Syrena Stanley and died in the Civil War;

    Judge James Thomas Lamkin, who married 1st Louisa C. Niblack and 2nd Frances Rebecca (Reeves) Odum;

    Sarah Ann Lamkin, who married 1st Daniel Harris and 2nd Dr. William Parks Bond;

    Louisa V. Lamkin, who married Rev. John R. Robinson;

    Robert Augustus Lamkin, who died in the Civil War;

    Caroline Lamkin, who married James B. Whitworth as his 1st wife;

    George W. Lamkin, who died young; and

    Laura C. Lamkin, who married James Terrell Wood.
