    COLUMBIA: Graveside service for Mary Joe Thorpe, 78, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock, Monday, November 6, 2006, at Elmwood Cemetery with Rev. Brian Peake officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Sunday at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Eau Claire Presbyterian Church, 629 Wildwood Ave., Columbia, SC 29203.
    Mrs. Thorpe died Friday, November 3, 2006. Born in Chester, SC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Franklin Wylie. She was a long time member of Eau Claire Presbyterian Church and retired from the S. C. Employment Commission where she worked as a legal secretary for many years. Mrs.Thorpe was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who devoted her early years to raising her sons before returning to work.

    Survivors include her sons, Reverend Jim Thorpe and wife, Mary of Ridgeway, Joe Thorpe and wife, Andrea of Columbia, Kevin Thorpe and wife, Melissa of Gilbert; grandchildren, Steven, Julia, David, and Kaylee Thorpe; sisters, Gina Caughman and husband, Bill of Columbia, Sally Vess of Chester, Nancy Wylie of Lexington. She was predeceased by her husband, Archie S. Thorpe, Jr., and brother, M. F. “Buddy” Wylie.
