    Dr. John Durr Elmore, age 91 , died on February 21, 2014 He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Nesbitt Elmore, Stanhope E. Elmore, Jr., and William B. Elmore; his sister Kate Durr Elmore; and his first wife Marilyn Williams Elmore, after 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his present wife, Mary Paty Bargeron Elmore; three children: Millie Elmore Hulsey (William C.), John Durr Elmore, Jr. (Judy), and Wesley Williams Elmore (Kathy), all of Birmingham; by four grand-children: Carl Duncan Hulsey, II (Kelly), Marilyn Hulsey Dixon (James M.), Jackson Williams Elmore, all of Birmingham; and Donna Christine Elmore Exum (Lee) of Panama City, Florida; by five great grand-children: Sara Nicole Martin of Panama City, Florida, James Nimmo Dixon, William Hulsey Dixon, Elizabeth Grace Hulsey, and Carl Duncan Hulsey, III, all of Birmingham; by three step-children: Lee Bargeron (Amy), Paty Bargeron Bryant, and Ruth Bargeron Ozment (Frank), and their children Edward Bryant, Mary Paty Bryant, Julie Bryant, and James Ozment. Born and reared in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the third of five children of Kate Durr and Stanhope E. Elmore. John Durr graduated Starke University School in Montgomery in 1939 and the University of Alabama in 1943. He completed medical studies at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1945 and served an internship at the City Hospital in Mobile, Alabama from 1945 to 1946. John Durr's military career began in the Army of the United States where he served from 1943 to 1945 as a Private First Class. He served again from 1946 to 1948 in the Medical Corps, and was discharged as a Captain. Dr. Elmore took his residency training in the specialty of Psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York City, 1948-1949 and again from 1950-1951. He trained in the interim at the Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York from 1949-1950. He was a private practitioner of Psychiatry employed by the Frank Kay Clinic of Birmingham from 1951 until his retirement in 1989. He served on the part-time faculty of the University of Alabama in Birmingham in the Department of Psychiatry, last as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry until 1972. Dr. Elmore was licensed to practice medicine in the states of Alabama and New York. A Diplomate in Psychiatry of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, he was an Assistant Examiner on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology until 1970. From time to time, he was on the staffs of the Carraway Methodist Hospital, Baptist Medical Center Montclair, Brookwood Medical Center, the St. Vincent's Hospital and the Children's Hospital, all of Birmingham. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, the Southern Psychiatric Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Jefferson County Medical Society, and for one year served as President of the Alabama District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association, of which he was a Charter member. He was Vice President and a Director of the Dothan Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Inc. from 1962-1986. John Durr was a member of the Independent Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Club of Birmingham and the Mountain Brook Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central Alabama for several years and on the Board of the Jefferson-Blount-St. Clair Mental Health Authority for 25 years. A memorial service will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 10am. The family will receive visitors following the service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that contributions would be welcomed by United Way of Central Alabama, Children's Aid Society, Independent Presbyterian Church, or Birmingham Botanical Society. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Elmore's devoted caregivers Susan Childs, Robert Smith, Meinrad Tabengwa, Purity Ruto, and his longtime assistant Jan Shannon.
