Ralph Granville Wesley (November 7, 1914 - April 3, 2004) REV. RALPH WESLEYRev. Ralph Granville Wesley, age 89, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at his home in Somerset. Rev. Wesley was born November 7, 1914 near Oil Center, Pulaski County, Kentucky, a son of the late Eubert Layton and Sarah Elizabeth Freeman Wesley.He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Gladys Wild Wesley; two children, Rev. J. Rue Wesley and Margaret Wesley Jasper; three sisters, Mertie Wesley, Mattie Wesley and Dorothy Wesley Wilson; five brothers, John Wesley, Irvine Wesley, Rue Wesley, Raymond Wesley, True Wesley; and a grandson, Ralph Winton Wesley.Survivors include devoted wife, Katherine Hamm Wesley; daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Shan) Wesley Bacon, Nashville, Tenn.; beloved daughter-in-law, Genevieve Wesley and son-in-law, Dr. Patrick Jasper, Somerset; grandchildren, Anne Margaret Wesley, Holly Springs, NC, William Rue Wesley, Lexington, Ky., James Richard (& Geneen) Bacon, Nashville, Tenn., Winston Wesley (& Greta) Bacon, Nashville, Barry Wesley (& Sherry) Bacon, Lexington, Ky., Kevin Clifton Bacon, Maryville, Tenn., Jennifer Jasper (& John) Joplin, Westchester, Ohio, and Patrick Wesley (& Christy) Jasper, Rockfield, Ky.; great-grandchildren: Marielle Genevieve Wesley, Holly Springs, NC, Winton Parker Bacon, Elizabeth Anne Bacon, Blair Wesley Bacon, Wesley Elizabeth Bacon, Winston Jacob Bacon and Zachary Michael Bacon, all of Nashville, Tenn., Caroline Williams Bacon, Memphis, Tenn., Christopher Wesley Joplin and Benjamin Addis Joplin, both of Westchester, Ohio, and Lucas Wesley, Rockfield, Ky.; nieces and nephews: Lois Wilson Cooper, Rue Wesley Jr., Roberta Wesley May, Raymond J. Wesley dedicated his life to the Lord at Beech Grove Methodist Church in Pulaski County and served 45 years as a United Methodist Minister. Ordained in the Kentucky Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1935, he served appointments in Louisville, Paint Lick,Cumberland, Pineville, Corbin, Somerset, Ft. Thomas and Ashland, Kentucky. After retirement, he served the Macedonia Methodist Church in Laurel County and the Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Somerset. He was a former District Superintendent of the Danville District of the United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees of Union College for 19 years as well as Sue Bennett and Lindsey Wilson Colleges.Dr. Wesley was graduated from Science Hill High School in Pulaski County and attended Sue Bennett, Lindsey Wilson, Western State Teachers College and the University of Louisville. He had theological training from Ohio Wesleyan University and Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Union College in 1960. He was a 33rd Degree Mason.Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church, 99 South Central Avenue, Somerset, on Monday, April 5, 2004, 4 to 9 p.m. and prior to service on Tuesday.Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 6, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at Somerset First United Methodist Church.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Somerset, Ky.

    Eubert was educated in the schools of the Bethelridge, Kentucky area and attended Berea Normal College for Teachers. He received his teaching certificate and taught in schools in his home area. He taught at the Sweet Water School at Rock Lick and the Floyd Switch School near Bethelridge.

    After his marriage in 1892 he and his wife settled in Pointer Creek and he taught at Pointer School as well as running a lumber mill with James Spears. From 1894 to 1900 they lived at Beech Grove and he taught at the subscription winter school at Bethlehem.

    From 1900 to 1903 they lived at Hogue while Eubert worked at the Creek Store (owned by his father) at Ansel. Eubert's farm land was worked by hired hands. In 1903 the family moved to Oil Center, Kentucky where Eubert worked with his father as a surveyor on road construction. He also was employed by Spotwood Lumber Company as a hauler.

    In 1906 Eubert bought some fertile Fishing Creek bottom land and installed his family there. He became a contractor in housing construction in that area. In 1911 they relocated to a new house above the Fishing Creek where he lived until his death in 1948.

    He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
