Ozark County Missouri, Cemeteries in Ozark County, Otter
The spot first selected for the Otter Creek Cemetery was on a gentle slopeing tract near the school. Within a short time, five children had been buried there, victims of what was then called the summer ague. The first was a Bascomb baby; number two, a Herndon; three and four were Decker children; and number five was a Brown. It was soon discovered that the spring which furnished water for the school had become polluted. Believing that the graves had been placed above the source of water for the spring, the community abandoned that burial site. It was important to save the spring. The cemetery was moved to its present site west of the church. This land drains from a different direction. This plot was deeded for a public burial ground by William and Eliza Jane Duckworth on 20 November 1914, and filed on 20 Feb 1915.
