    John Wiley Humphries

    Funeral services for John Wiley Humphries, 82, of Durant were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 3 at First Baptist Church in Durant. Officiating ministers were Rev. Johnny Dinas and Rev. Paul Williamson. Burial was in Mizpah Cemetery with Southern Funeral Home of Durant handling arrangements.

    Mr. Humphries died Saturday, June 30, 2001 at University Hospital Clinics-Holmes County in Lexington.

    A native of Durant, his parents were the late Tom Sage and Lucy Maury Humphries. He attended Durant High School and Mississippi State University. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of the Rotary Club of Durant; first president of Durant Junior Chamber of Commerce; and an Army veteran of World War II.

    While in the service, Mr. Humphries attended Commanding General School in Kansas. His administration skills were recognized and while other troops were being sent to war his time was spent in the United States training troops. This sometimes worried him, because he was not sent overseas like others. He left the U.S. Army a Lieutenant Colonel.

    Mr. Humphries worked with the Mississippi State Tax Commission from 1951 until 1985 when he retired as their Deputy Commissioner.

    He was preceded in death by a son, Dan Humphries of Portland, Oregon in 1999.

    Survivors include: his wife, Pauline Humphries of Durant; sons Tom Humphries of Durant and Ralph Humphries of San Carlos, California; brother, Maury Humphries of Mission, Texas; and six grandchildren.

    Serving as active pallbearers were Rick Baessler, Tommy Conner, Terry Brown, Terry Fancher, Jim Arnold, and David Truitt.
