    DALLAS - Margaret Neill Witherspoon Ratchford, 87, of Dallas, died Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 23, 1924, in Cherryville, daughter of Mr. Wray E. and Edith Crocker Witherspoon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Clyde Morris Ratchford, and her two brothers, Curtis C. Witherspoon and Kenneth Lamar Witherspoon. Margaret Neill was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Dallas and served the church in many capacities. She loved teaching children God's word in Sunday school. It was not uncommon for Margaret Neill to host Vacation Bible School or other children's events in her home.Margaret Neill graduated from Dallas High School in 1942. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked for many years at St. Michael's School as a dietitian.She and her husband, Clyde, were devoted to the causes of children. They opened their home to foster children from the Gaston County Social Services and also Mills Home in Thomasville. Holidays and summer vacations were always special times with these children. The children were loved and cared for while in their home.Margaret Neill served as director of Dallas Christian Ministries for almost a decade. She cared for the greatest needs of others. In her later years, she was known for her devotion to the Samaritan Purse Christmas Shoe Box campaign. Margaret Neill worked for months to assemble as many boxes as she could. She often did this with friends and family. She was recognized by Samaritan Purse for her efforts when she completed 540 Christmas shoe boxes.In addition to her love of family, Margaret Neill was noted as one of the top cooks in Dallas. She was known for her cakes and pies and especially her red velvet cakes that were always on the Christmas table.Margaret Neill is survived by her son, William C. Ratchford and his wife Ginny of High Point, and her daughter, Jeanne Ratchford Quiett of Dallas, four grandchildren, Kristy Ratchford Crisp (Robert), William Daniel Ratchford and fiancée Katie Briana George, Laura Ratchford Hanf (Jason); Andrew Austin Barrett; two great-grandchildren, Lucas Carter Crisp and Madison Grace Hanf. Margaret Neill is also survived by her loving and caring brother Wilburn W. Witherspoon and his wife Emma Ruth of Dallas; numerous nieces and nephews.The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at Alexandria Place in Gastonia where Margaret Neill lived her last 8 months. They cared for her with great commitment, love and compassion.The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2012, at McLean Funeral Home on New Hope Road.A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Dallas, with the Rev. Dr. George Gilbert and the Rev. George Rhyne officiating. A private service of committal will be held at Gaston Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to either Our Savior Lutheran Church P.O. Box 457, Dallas, NC 28034, or Samaritan's Purse, P.O.
