CHESAPEAKE - Ernest Lloyd Dick, 69, passed away after a long illness April 6, 2008.
He was born Nov. 30, 1938 in Somerset, Ky. He was the son of the late Vearl and Wilma Alta Dick. Ernie left home at the age of 17 to join the United States Navy. He retired as a chief petty officer after serving 21 ½ years. His dream of seeing the world was realized during his time in the service. While stationed in New London, Conn., he met his beloved wife, Linda M. Champagne.
Besides his beloved wife of 46 years, Linda, he leaves four sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Kathleen of Crestview, Fla., James and Dawn of Chesapeake, Randy and Meridee of Virginia Beach and Gregory and Laura of Chesapeake. He also leaves eight grandchildren, six sisters in Kentucky two sisters-in-law and brother-in-law in Connecticut and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ernie was active in his sons’ activities serving as scout leader and baseball coach. He was a member of the South Norfolk Moose Lodge No. 464. He rose through the chairs of the Moose, serving as the governor of the lodge and became fellow. He will be greatly missed by all.
One of Ernie’s passions was working with wood. One could find him in his workshop making things for the family and friends. He was an accomplished carpenter and had his own business, D&S Construction, until his illness.
A funeral will be conducted by Pastor Robert Pittman Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, with interment to follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, with full military honors at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6315 N.
