Name: Mary (Polly) Elliott
Sex: F
Birth: 13 JAN 1800 in Maryland
Note: abt 12 mi. form Falls of the Potomac
Death: 2 OCT 1858 in Forest City, Holt Co., Missouri
Note: 1.) Source: "The Typical Western Boy of 50 Years Ago"handwritten by Jesse Portman Chesney. "My mother's maiden namewas Mary Elliott. She was a native of Maryland, born 12 milesoff the falls of the Potomac, January 13, 1800; but her peoplehaving removed to Nelson County, (near Louisville), Kentucky, when she was a small child, she was mostly brought up in thatcounty. When she had attained her larger girlhood however, herparents moved to Pulaski County in the southeastern part of theState and here she married to my father in , perhaps, 1818. Shewas of a quiet and industrious disposition, devoted to thewelfare of her family and well liked by her neighbors. Was agood housekeeper and found her greatest pleasure in her ownhome. She came, soon after her marriage, to the home on thelittle creek 20 miles away from her family, who lived atSomerset. The little creek mentioned was Turkey Creek, in CaseyCounty, at Green River Knob, and here she continued to live -here she brought up a family of 4 boys and 5 girls, and onlyquitted the little valley between the hills, in the fall of1855, when we migrated to Holt County, Missouri. She died nearForest City in that County, October 2nd, 1858 - the day on whichthe first organized company of emigrants left the states forPikes Peak Gold Fields - bound, as they were, for Cherry Creek. These were a company of young men of Forest City and vicinity -among them being a young Dr. Reed and a young man namedJennings, of Oregon. Jennings died on the way out, but Reed andothers went on and pitched their tents on the site of thepresent City of Denver - which they laid out and named. Theyreturned in the latter part of the winter by the way of theArkansas River, Fort Dodge, etc. These young men were the ownersof Denver City, but whether they ever realized much from theirpioneering venture, I am not apprised. * Note by DAU: Polly's son, James C. Chesney died abt 1864 atPikes Peak, Colorado. Could he be that he was a member of thelatter party.
