    Velva Josephine Cain, 90, of Mintonville died August 5, 2012 at Somerset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her family by her side.

    Born May 1, 1922 to Alonzo H. and Mary B. Jasper Perkins, Velva lived her entire life in the Mintonville community with the exception of a short absence during which she traveled to Detroit to support her family and the war effort by working in airplane manufacturing.

    She married WWII veteran Dewie Cecil Cain July 7, 1949, and together they had three children. Velva was a consummate caregiver who tirelessly served her family, church and neighbors. She loved to garden, quilt, sew and cook and was known as a fierce and faithful children and women’s Sunday School teacher at Carter Ridge Baptist Church for many years.

    She is survived by her children, Joanna (and Johnny) Harness, Darrell (and Debra) Cain, and Dannie (and Sheila) Cain all of Mintonville; six grandchildren, Joey (and Stacey) Harness of Hardinsburg, Jenny (and Steve) Watkins of Somerset, Derek Cain of Morgantown, Dana (and Jason) Purcell , Jason (and Rachel) Cain and Courtney Cain, all of Mintonville; six great-grandchildren Seth and Ben Harness of Hardinsburg, Josie and Lilly Watkins of Somerset, and Hunter and Tyler Cain of Mintonville; one sister, Audrey Cooper of Albany, IN; one brother, Ezra (and Georgianna) Perkins of Hamilton, OH; a special cousin Lorene Vaught of Mintonville; and twenty-three nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Brent, Velber and T.J. Perkins; two sisters, Maudie Linneman and Alena Huff; and six nieces and nephews.

    Visitation and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held Friday, August 10th at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday, August 11th at Carter Ridge Baptist Church with Brother Joey Harness, Brother Derek Cain and Pastor Richard Owens officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Cain, Steve Watkins, Jason Purcell, Seth Harness, James Huff and Eddie Cooper. Honorary pallbearers will be Jenny Watkins, Dana Purcell, Courtney Cain, Ben Harness, Josie and Lilly Watkins and Hunter and Tyler Cain.

    The family request expressions of sympathy be made to the Carter Ridge Cemetery Fund and/or Hospice of Lake Cumberland.

    Lake Cumberland Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Velva Josephine Cain.
