EARLDOM OF BEDFORD (I) 1138
HUGH DE MEULAN, styled also "le Pauvre", called "Hugo Pauper," 3rd son ofRobert, Count of Meulan in France, and 1st EARL OF LEICESTER, byElizabeth, daughter of Hugh, Count of Vermandois, was knighted before1138, and is alleged to have been created EARL OF BEDFORD by King Stephenin 1138, who put him in possession of the Castle and Barony of Bedford, ejecting the sons of Robert Beauchamp, whose cousin, the daughter andheir of Sir Simon BEAUCHAMP, had been granted in marriage to the saidHugh. He appears, however, to have lapsed into poverty and even to havebeen degraded from his peerage three or four years afterwards, and at hisdeath the title in all probability, became extinct.
