3. ROBERT III de Stuteville of Cottingham, Kettleby Thorpe, Yorks. andBigby, Lincs. In 1138 he fought at the Battle of the Standard. Instigatedclaims to recover property confiscated from his grandfather in 1147 andwas granted 10 knights' fees by Nigel de Mowbray which included the manorof Kirkby Moorside and land in Warwickshire shortly after 1154.Supervisor of the works of Bamburgh castle in 1166 and sheriff ofYorkshire from Easter 1170 to Michaelmas 1175. Benefactor to the abbeysof St Mary's York, Byland, Rievaulx and Meaux and the priory of Durham. Acharter of confirmation to Rievaulx abbey c.1160-1183 for the health ofhis soul and the souls of Robert de Stuteville his grandfather, Roberthis father, Erneburga his mother and Helewise his wife, and with theconsent of his son William, presents the Stuteville family over fourgenerations. J.C.Atkinson (ed.), 'Rievaulx Cartulary', p.80]. He married,before 1145, Helewise whose parentage is not known and they foundedKeldholm priory, a Benedictine nunnery. As 'domina Helewis uxor Robertide Stuteuilla' with Osmund 'filius ejus' she witnessed a charter ofWilliam de Vescy to the brethren of Farne Island in about 1183. Roberthad an interest in Cowesby as shown by a charter of notification datedaround 1164-74, by Roger archbishop of York of the settlement of thecontroversy between Hugh bishop of Durham and Robert de Stutevillerelating to the chapel of Cowesby. The dispute continued, however, afterhis death under the aegis of his son Osmund. Robert died in 1183.
Issue:
- William son and heir, the king's justice. Married Berta possiblygranddaughter (as she appears younger than the 4 daughters and outlivedthem) of Ranulf de Glanville. [The Durham Liber Vitae lists "Rannulfus deGlanvile et uxor ejus Berta, Matillis, Amabilis, Helewisa, Mabilia filaeeorum, et Berct"]. On the death of her son Berta's property fell toRanulf son of Robert of Middleham, Thomas de Arderne and Hugh deAuberville who each had a third of her lands in Bramham and Leyburn. Allthree were sons and representatives of the daughters of Ranulph deGlanville. Hugh d.1203, leaving son and heir Robert IV who died s.p.underage in 1205. William also had an illegitimate daughter.

- Osmund of Cowesby, Yorks. and Gressenhall, Norfolk.
- Eustace of Brinklow, Warwickshire d.1218. His son and heir was Robertwho was brought up overseas.
- Robert of Great Ayton and Hemlington, Yorks.
- Burga. Married to William de Vescy and had Langton as her maritagium,living as a widow in 1185.
- Helewise. Married (1) William II de Lancaster, lord of Kendal d.1184 bywhom she had Helewise (2) Hugh de Moreville of Burgh, Cumberland d. 1202by whom she had Ada and Joan (3) William son of Ranulf, lord of Greystoked.1209 by whom she had Thomas. In 1209 Robert de Vipont owed 500 marksfor and 5 palfreys for the custody of the land and heirs of William andthe marriage of his widow. Helewise died after 1228.
