Child(ren):
John Peck, born 30 November 1791; died 17 December 1851 in Weakley Co. TN. He married Temperance Amanda Crawford 08 May 1832 in Davidson Co. TN. She was born 17 October 1799 in Wayne Co, North Carolina; died 17 March 1843 in Weakley Co. TN. She was the daughter of Lazarus Crawford and his first wife.
Peck was a planter in the Dresden - Gleason, Weakley County Tennessee area. He is found on the 1828 Weakley County Tax list with 400 acres, #1353, range 1, section 6, district 12, as one free pole with two slaves. He is also listed in 1829, 1830, 1831, and 1832 with 402 acres. The 1840 Tennessee Census for Weakley County lists John Peck, page 267, with one male 40-50 years of age, one female 40-50, one female less than 5, and two females 5-10. The 1850 Census for Weakley (176-727) lists John Peck, age 59, Caroline, 15, born Tennessee, Temperance, 14, born TN.
Until this moment, we were able of learning nothing about the ancestry of John Peck and unfortunately he had no male child, which could improve the interest of researching about him. The Hollowell Papers describe the Pecks as "a proeminent Nashville family" moved to a farm between Clarksville and Paris. There was a Nashville land dealing in Davidson Co. TN between John Peck and Adam Peck. Also, another researcher had written a note that in researching the family, she thought Adam Peck might possibly be the father of John Peck.... Given this land dealing they would have been kinsmen, brothers, father-son, etc.
Peck was robbed and killed by two of his slaves who were hanged for the crime. I did find in Goodspeed's History of Weakley County, "The persons that have been hanged in the county by the sanction of the law were Anthony and Alfred, two slaves, who murdered their master, John Peck. They were hanged 18 June 1853." In this same history there is a biography on Joseph G. Thomason and wife Sara C. Peck. When John was murdered, only his youngest daughter was single. Delia being married for three years and Sarah, two months before his death.
John Peck wrote his will 24 of July 1843 and listed his assets as 1068 acres of land in Weakley County, TN "where I now live", a piece of ground 35 1/2 feet on Cherry Street in the town of Nashville and 1/4 of a piece of land with a brick house on Market Street in Nashville, formerly known as the Macintosh Property; Money owed from Samuel Elam and Thos. Claiborne, on record at Davidson Co., Circuit Court; Money owed from Enoch Wilborn, (note) in hands of W.L. and R.C. Foster. It names his fourteen slaves: Sip, Wilson, Milly, Mary, Sally, Alfred, Mariah, Anthony, Isam, and Adaline and her four children Ann, Green, Jane, and Willie. He had also 16 horses and mules, 58 cattle, sheep, hogs, tools, furniture and $3,000 cash, and other claims and debts of $25. He named three daughters, Temperance Amanda, Sarah Caroline, and Delia Elizabeth and made Ephraim Hubbard Foster of Nashville, no relationship is given, his executor and guardian of the children. Peck mentions the graveyard where his wife, son and daughter are buried. (Where are the family members buried buried?). No witnesses are given. The will was proven in January 1852 in Weakley County Court, TN Record and Will Book B 1840-1861, p.320-322. There is an abstract of this will in one of the Weakley Remembered books.
Ephraim Hubbard Foster, 1794-1854, was born in Kentucky. He was a member of Tennessee State legislature and U.S. Senator from Tennessee, from 1837 to 39, and from 1843 to 45. He is buried at City Cemetery, Nashville, TN.
Temperance Amanda Crawford had been married, prior to John Peck, to Jacob Thompson, in Rutherford County, TN, bond first or March 1817, marriage the fourth. Alfred Blackman, her brother-in-law was the surety. Nothing is known regarding this union and Jacob Thompson has not been located in the 1820 Tennessee Census Index nor 1820 Tennessee census for Rutherford County. He was however found on the 1812 muster roll of the Company of Mounted Militia Infantry commanded by Captain John Crawford, ordered into service for the protection of the southwestern frontiers against raids by the Creek Indians. It has been assumed that Thompson died, perhaps during a military skirmish with the Indians.
Temperance's obituary, published in the Nashville Whig stated: "Mrs. Temperance B. Peck, daughter of the late Major Lazarus Crawford died in Weakley County near Dresden on the 17th inst in the 44th year of her life." It seem the reason was parturition problems with her youngest child, and only son, John Lazarus, who survived her only twenty three days.
The children of John Peck and Temperance Crawford were:
Delia Elisabeth Peck
Born 4 February 1833 in Davidson Co. TN; died 19 October 1894 in Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil.
Sarah Caroline Peck
Born 6 November 1834; died 23 January 1891 in Dresden, TN.
Temperance Amanda Peck
Born 17 December 1836; died 24 January 1875.
Catherine Stebar Peck
Born 1 February 1840; died 14 April 1840. Among the family papers Delia Elizabeth Peck took to Brazil, there was a small quick note, inside the family bible, quoting four names, probably taken from the family member's tombstones. This paper tells the dates of birth and death of John, Jonh Lazarus, Temperance and Catherine. As we do not know the whereabouts of this paper, we do have this information from a letter Margaret Holland wrote to Stella Thomason in 1937. In the letter she copies the paper and says that Catherine's middle name was not clear, seeming to be Ushubar. Recently I found a woman named Catherine Stebar, married to an Adam Peck in TN (no known relation), however she could be a relative. A third possiblity is that her middle name was Ursula.
John Lazarus Peck
Born 17 March 1843; died 10 April 1843.
