According to Dub Smith, local tradition in the Bobbitt area was that "Old Man Kittrell" died of MS, and that the disease periodically occurred among his descendants. Other sources claim he suffered from epilepsy.
Dub is Sumner Forrest Smith, a grandson of a granddaughter Sallie Best of Fielding Kittrell. Dub was alive when I moved to NC but it was not that we nor his widow, who joined Kittrells of America, connected sufficiently for me to discuss the MS/epilepsy issue. In fact I do not know where the "Bobbit area" of Granville County, North Carolina would be, back then, or now. It is somewhat weird a man whOo died
at 46 would ever be called "Old Man Kittrell" by the locals.
