His father is believed tobe a John Higgs of Chaptico district in Maryland. There were several JohnHiggs of this time, so there is no definite proof of which one was hisfather. Hepaid cash into the Militias of North Carolina , South Carolina , andVirginia. No other records have been found of his service in that war,but many records were destroyed by fire. One of his land records datedOct. 21, 1778 refers to him as Capt. Zack Higgs. He took the census of Fishing Creek District in 1786 and was a sheriff sappointee in 1799.1784Zachariah Higgs was one of the executers of the will below. One of the children of Zachariah was named Kenelm. LindaReno, county historian of Saint Mary's Co., MD, said that there were no Kenelm families in the St. Mary's area as far as she knew. "Also Eleanor Mattingly, daughter of Zachariah married a Alys EleanorHiggs [prob. early 1800's]. Zachariahs estate was settled in 1829 and they rec'd a share.Elizabeth KenelmPosted by: larry baggettDecember 14, 2001 at 14:25:48This probably can never be proven but it is my firm belief that ElizabethKenelm the wife of Zachariah Higgs is actually Elizabeth Cheseldine OfKenelm. She was the daughter of Kenelm Cheseldine (1710-1765 )and ChloeNelson (1732-abt 1770). I think her father's first name has beenmisinterpreted as her maiden name. She was born in 1742 at White NeckFarm in St Marys Co., Maryland. Nothing more is known about her. Ib elieve she married Zachariah Higgs of Chaptico, St Marys Co., Maryland and they moved to Granville Co., North Carolina by 1786. Good Luck!
