BIOGRAPHY: "James Washington Knox and Samuel Houston Knox rode on horseback from their home in Trinity County to Porter Springs, Houston County, Texas , to enlist in the Resere Cavalry Company, Beat No. 7, Trinity County, 11th Brigade, 13th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. However, their company was reorganized into Company A, 6th Battalion (Gould's Battalion), Texas Cavalry. Actually, their unit served as infantry. This unit participated in battles at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas, and at Mansfield and Pleaseant Hill, Louisiana. During the severe winter of1862-63 while in Arkansas, the unit was struck by a measles epedemic. Many died, but Samuel Houston Knox was taken in by a local family and nursed back to health. After the unit disbanded in May 1865 at Hempstead, Texas, the two Knoxbrothers returned to Trinity County, Texas."
