The Reverend Dr. Henry Erskine Pressly

Dr. Henry Erskine Pressly, 88, of Charlotte, NC, died on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at his home. Dr. Pressly was born on January 11, 1910, in Statesville, NC, a son of the late James Hearst Pressly and Mable Lowry Pressly. Educated in the public schools of Statesville, he received his AB Degree from Erskine College, his Th.B Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, and his PhD from Edinburgh University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Erskine College and served on its Board of Trustees.

Dr. Pressly served two pastorates in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian denomination, first in Anderson, SC, and from 1950-1980 at the Tabernacle Church in Charlotte. He served his denomination as Moderator in 1970.

During World War II, Dr. Pressly served as an Army Chaplain with the 88th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy. He was with his Division on the front lines in Italy for 200 days, and is remembered as one of the brave men who was there when he didn't have to be.

Dr. Pressly was a strong but gentle man, with a unique sense of humor. He will certainly be missed.
