GRIFTON - Roland Kittrell Smith, passed away peacefully at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, NC on Thursday, May 23, 2002. Born in the St. John's community of Pitt County, he was the son of the late James Franklin Smith and the late Mattie Cox Smith. He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Louise, and his brothers, William, Reid and James as well as a sister, Elizabeth Anglim. He was a member of the Grifton Christian Church, veteran of the US Army, disabled American Veteran, building contractor and a retired minister. He was active for many years in the Kinston Chapter for Disabled American Veterans (DAV) where he held various posts including Commander and Chaplain.Survivors include his son, Jimmy Smith of Hampstead, son and daughter-in-law, Billy And Lorraine Smith of Grifton; two grandchildren, Ricky Smith and Susan Smith; step-grandchild Kim Marlowe Tyler; three great-grandchildren, Lindsay Smith, Stephanie Smith and Zachary Smith; two step-great-grandchildren, Kyle Stuart and Kevin Stuart and one sister, Alice Wesbrooks of Kinston. The family will receive family and friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Edwards Funeral Home in Kinston. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Edwards Funeral Home in Kinston at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, with the Rev. David Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery in Kinston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Grifton Rescue Squad or the Kinston Chapter for Disabled American Veterans.
