He married twice, first Augusta C. Finley, on April 18, 1865, who died July l, 1877, leaving one child, a son. Lewis Summerfield Scruggs after the death of his first wife, married Priscilla Scruggs, nee Hanmond, a widow with two children.
He enlisted as a private in Company B, 15th Regiment of Mississippi Infantry, was promoted to Captain of Company B, 17th Mississippi Regiment, and was a Major in Featherstone Brigade Army of Northern Virginia, when surrendered under General Robert E. Lee in 1865.
