AFN: 7K74-0N Death Certificate: Buncombe, NC Book 50 Page-1266 Dearly loved and was loved by all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called him "Daddy Bob". Daddy Bob loved to tell apocryphal stories, to the delight of his children and friends. There were a few tales told _about_ him as well. One such goes that it was hog-killing time. Daddy Bob didn't care to be involved in the operation, so he would say he was going to town to get salt. Along about dark, as the story is told with a twinkle in the eye, Daddy Bob would return home, "smelling of strong drink and the truth not in him". One story that is recounted often as a "Daddy Bob Story" is the one about Mimma's chili and the cat. One day, Mimma was making chili in the kitchen, tasting and stirring. According to the story, her chili was the hottest going. She'd stir and taste, adding more hot pepper. As she was cooking this particular batch of chili, an old yellow cat kept stropping her leg, bothering her for attention. She was preoccupied making this chili, peppering and stirring, so she'd try to shoo the cat with her foot. All the while, the chili was getting hotter and hotter, the cat was stropping, and Mimma was getting more and more aggravated at the interruption. Finally, in exasperation and distraction, she swatted the cat with the very spoon with which she had been stirring the now-fiery chili. As the story is told, that chili was SO hot, that the cat's backside healed-up and ha'red-over before cat could turn around to lick the chili off.
