BIOGRAPHY OF A PATRIOT ANCESTOR
Philemon Hodges was born 1760 in Cumberland county, North Carolina. He married Winefred Kittrell. He applied for a pension in 1832 at the age of 71, while residing in Muscogee county, Georgia. What we know about Hodges military service comes from his pension papers, which were witnessed by Seaborn Jones, Esquire and John Howard, Clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Three months before the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Philemon enlisted in the Continental Army. Two months later his unit, commanded by Col William Thornton, helped to defeat a huge British land and sea force attempting to capture Chatleston, SC. It was the Battle of Sullivan's Island. As a result, the enemy abandanod the attack and its fleet and land forces returned to New York

He served four more tours of three months each. Forced by Tories on one occasion to take refuge in the North Carolina mountain, he avoided capture and was able to return to his home in central North Carolina. Commissioned two years later in the county militia, he served as a Captain of Light Horse until the end of the war.

Afterwards, Captain Hodges, with his son's family, came to Georgia along the traditional migration route through Wilkes, Putnam and Baldwin counties, finally receiving a land grant in District 25, Section 2, Lot 171 in Few's District of Muscogee county. They came to this county as early as 1829 when the city of Columbus was one year old. Philemon Hodges died in 1848.

Samuel Hodges, only son of Philemon and Winefred, married Elizabeth DeSassure Smith of South Carolina and they had eight children named Samuel Jr., Martha Ann, Westley, John, Henrietta, Clara, Mary and Maria. Samuel, Jr. was first a businessman and also a minister. He was an auctioneer with a partner as Hodges, Moore and Co. As a minister he served as a delegate to the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, OH. He performed numerous marriages in the area from 1832 until his death in 1840 at age 45.

Descendants here with us today descend from Samuel, son of Philemon, and Martha Ann, daughter of Philemon. Many have brought their extended family with them. We acknowledge the presence at this ceremony of Mrs. Joseph (Pat) Walter Jr. and grandson William Newton Boyd III; Pat's daughter Laura Byrd, wife of Billy Byrd who is working today. Also C. Dexter Jordan with wife Pat and Ruth Calhoun III; Thornton Jordan with wife Sue and son Miles; Karen Diane Cooper, Doug and Karen; and Pat Walter's cousin with her 3-year old boy.

Notes
Most Surely a brother to our John Hodges I b 1720 of Long Bluff, Old Cheraw Dist. now Marlboro Co. SC as William's son Philemon states in his rev war pension app that he went to his uncles in Long Bluff, SC. and was recruited by cousin John of Long Bluff. (see Philemon's record).
Index to Cumberland Co. NC Land Entries 1778-1795: Hodges names include: John, Edmund, James, Joseph, and Philemon, with James being the only repetition from the earlier lists.
From Vol 1, p. 5. A very popular (Ordinary) was reported to be in operation in the Linden comunity in the early 1750s. Operated under the strict supervision of William Hodges. However the earliest date I have found, he was granted a license to operate one at his dewlling house on 23 April 1757. William Hodges was a member of the first grand jury from what is now Harnett County. It met 20 January 1756.
A petition was filed by Mary Brown to have her Grand-daughter bound to William Hodges until she reached the age of eighteen. She was about ten years old at the time. According to court records the indenture was to be perfected. This petition was filed in February 1761.
William Hodges was fined forty Shillings for not showing for Grand Jury duty unless he could show just cause on 18 May 1763.
A deed was transferred from William Hodges to his son John Hodges in July 1775.
William Hodges, Sr. was summoned as a juror at the next session of court on 31 July 1778. William Hodges was a witness at some sort of trial on 26 October 1778.
(William Hodges who appears in Northampton County about 1739. Later we find the name William Hodges in Johnston County, North Carolina (where he was clerk of court for a while), and then in Cumberland County about 1771. William, the son of Thomas, who d. Cumberland Co., VA 1749, mentioned in court documents as early as 1761. This may be the one for whom a record exists 10 Dec 1764 Pittsylvania Co., VA having 374 acres surveyed near Fryingpan Creek. There is also one mentioned as being near Chestnut Creek in 1765. )
The William Hodges of Cumberland County appears to be the one who married Patience Hawkins and deeded land in the Welsh Tract of S.C. (i.e.,in Marlboro County) in 1754. Abstracts of Deed of Cumberland Co. NC, Vol I books 1-3; 1754-1770 by Wm C. Fields. also, in Craven Co SC (of Bladen Co NC) William and his wife Pateince sold land in 1754. In 1753 William is a planter in Bladen Co.
William Hodges came to NC from VA. He married Patience Hawkins of Warren or Franklin Co. NC. Their son Philemon Hodges born Oct. 25, 1760 died 1839. He married Winifred Kittrell born Oct 7, 1763, the dau of Samuel and Catherine Kittrell. Their children: Nancy, Polly, John, Catherine, William, Penelope, Joseph, George, Winifred, Philemon.
Colonial Records of NC,Vol. 15, p 209: Petition of Inhabitants of Cumberland co. the Gen. Assembly 1780: Phil Hodges, William Hodges, Jr. and Jno. Hodges. Requested that the Village called Cross Creek, within the Liberties of Campbellton, distinguish the said Village and Town by the names of Upper and Lower Campbellton; lay out the streets for the Village; build a new court house & gaol in the upper Town, now called Cross Creek, and the Courts be held in such Court House when built. =======================
In 1791 the North Carolina General Assembly incorporated the town named for William Avera, a prosperous planter and landowner, and originally known as Averasburg. (Eventually the English “boro” replaced the Scottish “burg.”) In 1774 Avera bought McAllister’s’ Grist Mill and opened a tavern at the intersection of Old Stage Road and the ferry’s dock. In 1791 he donated 120 acres to establish the town on the banks of the Cape Fear River, twenty-five miles north of Fayetteville. The first commissioners included William Avera, Robert Draughon, Philemon Hodges, William Rand, and David Smith. On October 1, 1794 a post office began operation. Legend has it that the North Carolina legislature could have named Averasboro, the capital of the state, but the bill failed by one vote. Raleigh therefore became the state capital.
