After the war, he returned and attended NC State College. He earned a living in the insurance business, working for Nationwide Insurance Company.

Robert Carlton "Bob" Ratchford, 79, of Raleigh died peacefully in his home on October 31, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born in Morganton, North Carolina to Brady Winfield and Lucille Robinson Ratchford and grew up in Dallas, North Carolina..

Robert was a graduate of Dallas High School, Class of 1951. He was quarterback on the Dallas High School football team and pitcher on the baseball team..

Robert married his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn Gray Wright, on September 13, 1953. They raised a family of three and shared 59 years of love and devotion to one another..

Robert graduated from North Carolina State University in 1959 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He was a member of the NC State Alumnus Association and an avid fan of his beloved Wolfpack. He rarely missed a home football game..

After brief employment at Wix as an engineer, Robert followed his call to work with people and took a job with Nationwide Insurance, where he worked as a Regional Sales Manager for 25 years. He loved and was loved by his colleagues at Nationwide, many of whom remained life long friends..

Robert was a man of faith. He was ordained as a deacon in Dallas Presbyterian Church and was an active member of North Raleigh Presbyterian Church..

Robert was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He loved the outdoors, the beach, and his boat Happy Times..

Robert was an inspiration to all who knew him for the active, joyful way he lived his life despite the rheumatoid arthritis which confined him to a wheelchair in his later years..

We love and will remember him for his large, generous personality. It enriched his life and ours..

Robert was preceded in death by his son Robert Carlton "Bob" Ratchford, Jr., his brother Ronald Gene Ratchford, and his niece Allison Addington Sabolchick..

He is survived by his wife Gwen Wright Ratchford of Raleigh, NC, his daughter Elizabeth Ratchford Brewer and husband John Martin Brewer of Clayton, NC, his daughter Susan Ratchford Mazzara and husband Christopher Stefan Mazzara of Cary, NC, and his daughter-in-law Cheryl Ann Ratchford of Raleigh NC..

He is also survived by three grandchildren Stefan Curtis Mazzara of Raleigh, NC, Rachel Elizabeth Hannah Mazzara of Chapel Hill, NC, and Rebecca Ann Ratchford of Raleigh, NC. He was proud of each of them..

His surviving siblings are Brady Winfield “Sonny” Ratchford, Jr. and wife Betty Beaver Ratchford of Dallas, NC, Nancy Ratchford Friday and husband Joe David Friday of Denver, NC, and Margaret Ratchford Addington and husband Larry Forrest Addington of Dallas, NC. He has 10 nieces and nephews..

A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 2:00 pm at North Raleigh Presbyterian Church..

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Robert Ratchford to Bayleaf Fire Department Station 1, 11713 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27614..
