It appears from Thomas' will that they were never married. The will states in part "I give and bequeath to Nelly Vickery sometimes called Nelly Gordy and sometimes Nelly Carroll who claims to have been married to me the sum of five dollars in cash to be paid to her by my exector which is all that I desire her to have of my property or estate amd which shall be in lieu and in full satisfaction of her claim to any of my estate and in full of all serving interest whatsoever in my property estate."
