Death: 6 Oct 1928 in Hasima, Brazoria Co., TX

Note:
Benjamin Richardson and his wife Hixie were farmers while living in
Alabama. They grew tired of the poor farming land and Benjamin made two
trips to Texas before he decided to move there. The family boarded a
home-seeker train during January 1908 in Alabama headed for Texas. They
arrived in Lane City, Wharton Co., TX. Their first year in Texas, they
farmed rice in the surrounding area which
was perfectly suited for rice. One year was enough of being a "mudrat"
as a rice farmer. They moved to Chances Prairie which was later the town
of Old Ocean, TX. He farmed there between 1910 and 1912. In October
1911, he bought 100 acres in Hasima which is located in both Matagorda
and Brazoria counties. He paid $17.50 per acre. Benjamin and his sons,
with the help of Mexican laborers, cleared the land of trees and built a
one and a half story home. He moved his family into the home on
Thanksgiving Day 1912. Sometime in 1915, he bought an additional 95
acres. Benjamin was a farmer, blacksmith, and grist mill owner. He
farmed various crops including cotton and corn.
Benjamin died suddenly at his home in Hasima of an unknown illness.
According to his grandson, James T. Reeves, Benjamin was working the
fields and at the end of the day, picked a pear from one of his trees to
eat. That evening he became very ill and died the next day. His body
was laid out in his bed, covered with an oiled cloth, and then covered
with ice prior to the funeral and burial. He is buried at Sweeny
Cemetery in Brazoria County, TX. His religion was Baptist.
Benajamin was a short man.
