Samuel Oliver Black joined the Confederate States Army in Tippah
County, Mississippi enlisting on March 18, 1862, just one month past
his eighteenth birthday. He was assigned to Company H' "Tippah
Farmers" of the 37th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. Captain Samuel
Benton was elected to the position of Colonel and given command of the
newly formed infantry regiment. On April 30 the thirty-fourth was
dispatched to Corinth. At some later time, the regiment was
redesignated as the 34th Mississippi Infantry Regiment.
Among the casualties that fateful day, November 30, 1864, was Samuel
Oliver Black, Corporal, 34th Mississippi Infantry Regiment ("Tippah
Farmers") Tippah County, Mississippi. He is buried near where he
fell in an unmarked grave not far from Franklin, Tennessee, which is
not too distant from his birthplace in Lincoln County, Tennessee.
