GREEN SEA
Horry County police searched Thursday for two men suspected in the death sof two Horry County men found late Wednesday in a Green Sea residence.

Billy Ray Brown, 46, of 1280 Olive Drive, Green Sea, and Ronnie Dean McDowell, 43, of 147 Green Sea Road S., Loris, were found dead in Brown's home just after 11 p.m. Wednesday, Horry County police Sgt. Scott Rutherford said.

Suspects in the killings were identified, but had not been arrested at press time, Rutherford said.

Horry County 911 Emergency Dispatch received a call at 11:10 p.m.Wednesday for a deceased person at Brown's mobile home. When officers arrived, they found Brown and McDowell dead, Rutherford said.

When Brown and McDowell arrived at the house, an adult and three children were there and got into a disagreement with the two men, Rutherford said an investigation revealed.

"This argument turned physical, which it is believed resulted in both being assaulted, and they died as a result of that assault,'' Rutherfordsaid.

Police declined to release the manner and cause of the men's deaths and a motive in the killings, Rutherford said.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, said Horry County CoronerRobert Edge, Jr.

McDowell, nephew of Horry County Magistrate Harry McDowell, and Brown had been best friends since grade school, said McDowell's mother, Mildred Waddell of Loris. She said Brown had picked up her son Wednesday night and the two returned to Brown's home. The men were talking about raising chickens, she said.

Waddell received word of her son's death about midnight Wednesday. She and members of her family gathered Thursday to console one another.

"It's awful,'' she said.

McDowell had a vinyl siding business and Brown worked with him. The last time Waddell saw her son was Tuesday night after she got off work.

McDowell, the oldest son of Waddell's four children, was the divorced father of three young children who lived with his ex-wife, she said. She described him as very outgoing.

Brown's death was the latest in a string of tragedies to hit his family. His younger sister, Kay Clemons of Tabor City, N.C., said their mother died four months ago in her sleep. Clemons' brother-in-law died last week and was buried Sunday, she said.

"I can't take any more,'' she said.

Brown, who just celebrated his birthday, was married and had a grown son by his first wife, Clemons said. He worked constantly and spent a lot of time with McDowell, she said.

"He would do anything in the world for anybody,'' she said.

A Tabor City woman and her two children have been charged with murder in the beating deaths of two Horry County, S.C., men, while a fourth suspectremains at large.

Melba Nealy, 41; Johnny Andrew Nealy, 22; and Renee Young, 19, were arrested Thursday at their home outside Tabor City, Horry County PoliceCapt. Guy Osborne said. Young and Johnny Nealy are Melba Nealy’s children.

Police still were looking for Jodis Doron Washington, 29, a friend of Melba Nealy’s who lived with the family. Osborne said Washington alsouses the names “Rico” and “Jody.”

All four face murder charges in the deaths of Billy Ray Brown, 46, ofGreen Sea, and Ronnie Dean McDowell, 43, of Loris.

Osborne said the four went to Brown’s home Wednesday night and coaxed him out to the porch, where he was beaten with a blunt object. McDowell was attacked after he, too, came out of the home.

Both men also were stabbed, but Osborne said it appeared they were beaten to death. Osborne said police had not determined a motive.

An argument among family members apparently got out of control lastWednesday leaving two lifelong friends dead in a Green Sea residence.

Ronnie Dean McDowell, 43, of 147 Green Sea Road South, Loris, and BillyRay Brown, 46, of 1280 Olive Drive, Green Sea, were found murdered inBrown's home by Horry County Police just before midnight June 21.Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a person deceased in Brown'shome.

An investigation by the Horry County Police Department revealed Brown had picked up McDowell and returned to his home where the men were going to discuss a business venture. Brown's wife, Connie and three children BillyRay Brown, Jr., Tanner Brown, and Matthew Brown were home at the time.

"It appears Brown and McDowell were home for a period of time when Johnny Nealy, (Brown's brother-in-law who lived next door), and Jodis Doron Washington, (a friend of Brown's mother-in-law Melba Nealy) showed up. An argument ensued which turned physical. Brown and McDowell were bludgeoned and stabbed or cut during the fight," said Sgt. Robert Rutherford of theHCPD.

Brown's mother-in-law Melba Nealy and sister-in-law Renee Young were also present at the scene while the argument and fight occurred. Brown's wife and three children were also in the residence at the time.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge pronounced both McDowell and Brown dead at the scene.

Johnny Nealy, of 1280 Olive Drive, Green Sea, and Melba Nealy of 62 JamesStreet, Tabor City, N.C., were arrested in Loris June 22, and charged with murder.

Brown's sister-in-law Renee Young of 62 James Street, Tabor City, was arrested early Friday morning in the Loris area and also charged withmurder.

Jodis Doron Washington of 62 James Street, Tabor City, was picked up on a fugitive warrant in Whiteville, N.C. early June 24 by Columbus County Sheriff Deputies and is being held in the Columbus County Jail pending an extradition hearing. If extradition is granted, he will be returned to Horry County where he will be served with a murder warrant.

"There is no indication, at this time, that this was anything but a family argument which turned violent. While we're not anticipating any other developments, the investigation remains in progress and there is the possibility of other charges being filed if additional information isuncovered," Rutherford said.

McDowell was the son of Junior McDowell of Conway and Mildred Waddell ofLoris. He was the nephew of Horry County Magistrate Harry McDowell.

Brown was the son of the late William and Margie Brown of Green Sea.
