Horry County police searched Thursday for two men suspected in the death sof two Horry County men found late Wednesday in a Green Sea residence.
Billy Ray Brown, 46, of 1280 Olive Drive, Green Sea, and Ronnie Dean McDowell, 43, of 147 Green Sea Road S., Loris, were found dead in Brown's home just after 11 p.m. Wednesday, Horry County police Sgt. Scott Rutherford said.
Suspects in the killings were identified, but had not been arrested at press time, Rutherford said.
Horry County 911 Emergency Dispatch received a call at 11:10 p.m.Wednesday for a deceased person at Brown's mobile home. When officers arrived, they found Brown and McDowell dead, Rutherford said.
When Brown and McDowell arrived at the house, an adult and three children were there and got into a disagreement with the two men, Rutherford said an investigation revealed.
"This argument turned physical, which it is believed resulted in both being assaulted, and they died as a result of that assault,'' Rutherfordsaid.
Police declined to release the manner and cause of the men's deaths and a motive in the killings, Rutherford said.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, said Horry County CoronerRobert Edge, Jr.
McDowell, nephew of Horry County Magistrate Harry McDowell, and Brown had been best friends since grade school, said McDowell's mother, Mildred Waddell of Loris. She said Brown had picked up her son Wednesday night and the two returned to Brown's home. The men were talking about raising chickens, she said.
Waddell received word of her son's death about midnight Wednesday. She and members of her family gathered Thursday to console one another.
"It's awful,'' she said.
McDowell had a vinyl siding business and Brown worked with him. The last time Waddell saw her son was Tuesday night after she got off work.
McDowell, the oldest son of Waddell's four children, was the divorced father of three young children who lived with his ex-wife, she said. She described him as very outgoing.
Brown's death was the latest in a string of tragedies to hit his family. His younger sister, Kay Clemons of Tabor City, N.C., said their mother died four months ago in her sleep. Clemons' brother-in-law died last week and was buried Sunday, she said.
"I can't take any more,'' she said.
Brown, who just celebrated his birthday, was married and had a grown son by his first wife, Clemons said. He worked constantly and spent a lot of time with McDowell, she said.
"He would do anything in the world for anybody,'' she said.
