    Jani was born on May 2, 1940 in Hattiesburg, MS to Woodrow Eugene Jones and Elizabeth Jenkins Jones. Jani was an only child whose best friend was her dog Pepper. She was very close to her cousins and large extended family. Her family moved to Arlington, VA when Jani was a teenager. She met her beloved husband-to-be, Bill Spengler, at Fairlington United Methodist Church. During their five year courtship, Jani attended James Madison College for two years.

    Bill and Jani were married on March 12, 1960 and began their lives together at Fort Ord, CA. They moved many times early in their marriage before eventually settling in Northern Virginia. Her greatest joy was the 3 beautiful children they had over the next seven years. Jani relished being a stay-at-home mom; however, circumstances required her to eventually enter the work force where she served as a dental assistant for many years, followed by a long-term position as an executive secretary with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    After her much-anticipated retirement, she enjoyed devoting her time to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Bill and Jani moved to Westminster at Lake Ridge, she volunteered as co-leader of the Encore thrift shop and enjoyed many social and church-related activities. Some of Jani’s favorite memories included many family beach vacations, cruising to exotic places and traveling the world. The epitome of hospitality, Jani loved to entertain, enjoyed her antics with her Red Hat Club, but most of all, cherished time with her family and friends. Her love of animals was life-long, and she was known to dote on her poodles.

    Jani is survived by her husband of 56 years, William D. Spengler; her children, Bonnie Kenison (David), Russell Spengler (Tracy), and Kristin McIntyre; grandchildren, Sarah Wright (Brian), Matthew Kenison (Jenna), Hayden Spengler, Nicholas McIntyre, and Charis McIntyre; great-grandchildren, Madison Wright, Katelyn Wright, Brandon Wright, and Daxton Kenison.

    A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Quantico National Cemetery. Please assemble at the Administration Building by 9:45 AM. “A Celebration of her Life” will follow at 11:00 AM in the Potomac Room at Westminster at Lake Ridge.
    In lieu of flowers, please consider a tax-deductible donation to the Westminster at Lake Ridge Resident Supporting Fund.
