Notes about Robert Edward Lee Scalf

Robert Scalf, son of the Revolutionary soldier John Scalf, was a soldier
in t he Civil War. His date of birth has been learned from a review of his
militar y record. Robert Scalf enlisted in the 49th Kentucky Volunteer
infantry, Co. F as a private on June 1, 1863 and was discharged on
December 26, 1864 at Lex ington, Kentucky. Robert received a land grant in
Clay County where he lived part of his life. The land grant that he
received was for 50 acres on Ground Hog Fork of Otter Creek.
Robert was one of the children indentured by the Russell County, Va.
court in 1829. He would have been approximately ten years ol d at the
time. There is no record as to whom he was indentured or what skill he
was to learn.
Robert was one of the three Scalf brothers who went to Kentucky in the
early 1830's. the brothers who came with him were Peter Scalf an d Jesse
Scalf. Robert and his brother, Peter married in Clay County on the sa me
day, which was October 18, 1835.
Robert Scalf's son Greenberry Scalf enl isted the same day he did in the
Union Army.
