De kazemat S-37, behorende tot een groepssterkte grenswacht, stond aan de weg [Tüddernweg] tussen Sittard en Heinsberg (Dtsl.), vlak aan de grens. De bezetting werd kort nadat het vuur op de Duitsers was geopend door 3,7 cm granaten, die de kazemat uiteindelijk zwaar beschadigden, naar buiten gedwongen. De soldaten Leers en De Klerk bleven zich echter nabij de kazemat tegen de genaderde Duitsers verzetten. Zij werden daarom met handgranaten bestookt en sneuvelden.
