    Jan en Jenneken MANTE-AALDERS emigreerden in 1888.
    Jenneken en hun vier oudste kinderen keerden om veiligheidsredenen in 1899 terug naar Holland, pal voor de Anglo-Boeren Oorlog. Een vijfde kind, Jenneke, werd geboren in Bussum, in Nederland, woonplaats van Jans twee jaar jongere broer Willem MANTE.
    Jan vocht met de Boeren, maar werd gevangen genomen door de Britten op Elandslaagte op zondag 22 okt 1899 en was als krijgsgevangene in het Deadwood kamp op St Helena tot het einde van de oorlog op 31 mei 1902. Het gezin was na de oorlog herenigd en vestigde zich op Garsfontein, Pretoria, Transvaal.

    Jan was, evenals zijn zoon Jan, begraven in een familie graf op zijn Garsfontein bezit in eikenbos dat nog steeds de plek markeert. Zijn lichaam werd later overgebracht en opnieuw begraven op de Zandfontein Begraafplaas in Pretoria. Dit werd noodzakelijk door de ontwikkeling van een woonwijk oostelijk van Pretoria. De plek van de oude hofstede wordt nu ingenomen door een modern flatgebouw, maar delen van een laan met erg hoge cypressen, geplant door Jan, functioneren tot op deze dagen als herkenningsteken.
