Cornelus' birth was registered as illigitemate under the name of his mother. His uncle Gerrit was a witness on his birth certificate. He was legitamized at the wedding of his parents.
He lived in haarlem, but moved to the province of Drente. At the time of his own wedding (1856) he was living in Assen, while his parents lived in Haarlem. His parents did not attend the wedding and instead sent a notarized consent form.

On 30 October 1877 the family left Smilde to move to Berkel en Rodenrijs (Source Population Registry Smilde), but there is no evidence that they ever arrived there.

His profession was listed as stoker (adding coal to fire of steam train engines) at the wedding of his daughter Catharina in 1882. The family was living in Niewer-Amstel at that time.
