Notes about Gerrit Vurens

There is a thank you note to the doctors in the hospital in Leiden, which assisted G Vurens, son of R. Vuurens in Leidsch Dagblad, December 10 1890; pg. 4. Although it is unsure that this actually placed by Gerrit's father Reinier.

There is a notary act dated 21 nov 1898 with notary C.A.E. Courbois in Nijmegen. Source: Regional Archive Nijmegen, Archive Nr 442, Act Nr. 3574. This probably relates to removal of a lien placed against certain property in Boskoop.

Gerrit's health was poor. He was dismissed early from the national militia for medical reasons. Since Gerrit was on the road a lot, it was difficult for Margaretha to take care of the children. The children were poor and neglected. The story goes that the youngest child, Johannes Jozef, died of malnutrition. After Gerrit's death the 3 elder boys were moved to the "De Heibloem" orphanage in Heythuizen. Probably the children suffered from tuberculosis, since Gerardus Joseph remembered that he had to stay in a separate cottage at nights during his years in the orphanage. The boys stayed at the orphanage until around 1920.

The family originally lived on Voorkade 20 in Boskoop. This house does no longer exist. Margaretha left Boskoop on January 30, 1912 and settled in Gouda on the "Boelekade" street. (There is a newspaper listing of a widow Vurens, born M.C.A. Joosten?, who moved from Gorinchem to Rotterdam in April of 1913. Source: Nieuwe Gorinchemsche Courant, May 15 1913; pg. 3).

Margaretha moved to The Hague on November 11, 1934 and lived with her son Reinier Thomas Antonius. She was listed as head of household and her son Thomas Nicolaas as her depedent.

Death announcement in: De Rijnlandsche Courant, 12/08/1911; p. 3/4
