Notes about François CARLEBUR

CARLEBUR (François) (2), geb. te Dordrecht 9 Oct. 1821, gest. aldaar 13 April 1893, zoon van Dirk François Carlebur en Maria Johanna Arendina Ruts. Hij was een zeeschilder, wiens werk vooral in Engeland waardeering vond. Bij het schildersvak oefende hij tevens dat van fotograaf uit, waarmede hij reeds aanving, toen de daguerrotypie pas in zwang kwam. Als zoodanig is hij als een der eersten in dit vak te beschouwen. Toen zijn schilderkunst in het buitenland de aandacht trok, liet hij de fotografie varen en legde zich uitsluitend op het schilderen toe. Vooral het Engelsche Kanaal en de Schotsche kusten waren het terrein zijner studie. Soms ook schilderde hij riviergezichten. Daar verreweg de meeste van Carlebur's schilderijen naar het buitenland verkocht werden, zijn in de nederlandsche musea slechts zeer weinig werken van hem te vinden. Te Dordrecht vindt men: Vuurtoren te Aberdeen, aangekocht uit de veiling zijner nagelaten werken.
