Jan behaalde zijn Mulo diploma op de Groen van Prinstererschool bij van Popta.Hij werd jongstre
bediende op Hoogovens in 1942.Doorliep vele avondstudies en klom op van Hoofd
Bedrijfsadministratie tot Onderdirecteur Administratie en vervolgens naar Directeur Administratie
Hoogovens.In 1984 werd hij benoemd tot lid van de Directie Staal en werd hij de controller.In
1982 werd hij benoemd tot Ridder in de orde van Oranje Nassau en in 1987 werd hij bevorderd tot
Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau.,
In 1970 verhuisde de familie naar Heiloo,alwaar hij ca 10 jaar lid was van het
gemeentebestuur,waarvan de laatste jaren als fractievoor- zitter van het CDA .Hij was bovendien
voorzitter van de Commissie van Beheer van de Gereformeerde kerk en later kerkrentmeester van de
Protestantse gemeente Heiloo.Hij was zeer actief in het Samen op wegproces in Heiloo.,
