    Het was zijn boezemvriend Herman Witsius - inmiddels Utrechts hoogleraar - die hem met deze waardigheid bekleedde. De motivatie van dit eerbetoon was gelegen in de achting voor Saldenus' geleerdheid. Het argument was niet uit de lucht gegrepen. Want hoewel zijn oeuvre overwegend stichtelijk van aard is, komt Saldenus er niettemin als een man van eruditie in naar voren
  • He died on February 8, 1694 in Den Haag, he was 66 years old.
    Eind januari 1694 preekte Saldenus in de Haagse Nieuwe Kerk. Het zou zijn voorlaatste preek worden. Opmerkelijk genoeg was zijn tekst: 'Siet, soo hy my doode, soude ik niet hoopen?' (Job 13:15). Hij sloot de preek af met deze woorden: 'Al doode hy ons, soo willen wy nogtans op Hem hopen, in alles wat ons wedervaert nae ziel en lighaem, onse eeuwige en tijdelijke behoudenis van hem afwagtende (...). En dan is 't veylig en troostelijk stille te wesen, als de Heere maer in alles de eere syns naems bekome (gelijk hy die sal bekomen) en wy de saligheyt onser ziele. Amen'. Twaalf dagen later, in de nacht van 7 op 8 februari, is Guiljelmus op 67-jarige leeftijd ontslapen en verkreeg hij 'de saligheyt sijner ziele'.
