    Fernando III van Castilië "el Santo"; koning van Castilië door overdracht door zijn moeder 1217 en door haar energieke optreden tevens koning Van León ter opvolging van zijn vader 1230; verklaart deze rijken tot één, voortaan ondeelbaar geheel; belast zijn moeder met het regentschap wanneer hij zijn niet-aflatende strijd tot verdere herovering van Spanje op de Moren aanvangt in 1233; verovert Córdoba 29-6-1236 en Murcia in 1241; bereikt door zijn voortdurende militaire successen dat de nieuwe emir van Granada (Muhammed I -al-Ghalib, bijgenaamd Ibn-al-Ahmar, 1233-1272) hem tribuut gaat betalen en Jaén aan hem ter verovering overlaat; verovert na een beleg van 15 maanden ook Sevilla 23-11-1248 en maakt dit tot zijn hoofdstad; verovert Jerez, Cadiz etc. 1250 waardoor de Reconquista (afgezien van Granada, dat zich tot 1492 kan handhaven) eigenlijk voltooid is; begunstigt de door zijn vader gestichte universiteit van Salamanca met grote inkomsten 1239; heilig verklaard door paus Clemens X 4-2-1671 (feestdag 13 juni)
