Gebleken is dat John (Johann), de zoon van Johan Anton, die in 1851 samen met zijn vader naar de Verenigde Staten emigreerde, in 1883 terugreisde naar Donsbruggen. Het is niet duidelijk of deze terugreis tot doel had een echtgenoot voor zijn jongste zus Petronella (Minnie) te zoeken, of dat Johan (John) om een andere reden naar Donsbruggen terugkeerde. Hij reisde in hetzelfde jaar weer terug naar de Verenigde Staten vergezeld door zijn neef Joseph Gertzen, zoon van zijn halfzus. Samen vertrokken John en Joseph per SS Maasdam uit Rotterdam en kwamen op 30 oktober 1883 in New York aan. Twee jaar later, op 14 september 1885 trouwden Minny en Joseph met elkaar. Deze gegevens zijn ontleend aan de passagiers-lijsten van het schip en de registratie-formulieren van de locale verkiezingen van 1892 in Chicago, waar Joseph Gertzen en Minnie inmiddels naar toe waren verhuisd.
