Na zijn inlijving op 5-3-1918 bracht Willem Jan Frederik Poolen aan het einde van de 1e Wereldoorlog zijn militaire diensttijd door als kanonnier vestingartilllerie oa. te Schoonhoven. Op 1-10-1919 ging hij met groot verlof, maar hij was reeds op 16-8-1919 te Utrecht uitgeschreven naar Amsterdam, waar hij als telegrafist bij de PTT een betrekking had gevonden. Later ging hij over naar de Postdienst.
