Notes about Leonardus Lambertus van Rhee

In 1919 begon Bertje van Rhee aan de kruising bij de kerk in Castenray een kruidenierszaak annex woning, bakkerij en café. Bertje kreeg in de regio onder meer bekendheid door de fotografie. Tal van historische foto’s uit de periode 1930-1950 zijn aan hem te danken. Bij zijn woning liet hij speciaal voor de fotografie een atelier bouwen. Daar drukte hij van glasplaatjes de foto’s af en voorzag deze aan de achterkant van zijn stempel.Op de foto uit ca. 1930 zien we Bertje van Rhee, terwijl hij zichzelf bediend van een lekkere borrel. Een grote hobby van Bertje was de jacht. In het café hingen aan de wand zijn jachtgeweer, patronentas en enkele jachttrofeeën. Het café heette dan ook ’t Jagershuis.

Een oude foto uit circa 1935 laat Bertje van Rhee uit Castenray zien met een geschoten vos. Bertje was een verwoed jager die ook dikwijls in ’t Câssels Broek op eendenjacht ging. De geprepareerde vos was vroeger in Café ’t Jagershuis boven het buffet te zien.

Op een foto uit circa 1935 zien we twee mannen op een tandem fietsen voorbij het café van Bertje van Rhee te Castenray. In die tijd kon je van alleen het cafébedrijf bij lange na niet leven en Bertje had daarnaast ook nog een bakkerij en kruidenierszaak. Voor het café stond een benzinepomp die Bertje exploiteerde. Verder verdiende hij nog iets bij met het maken van foto’s die hij in het naast zijn woning gelegen atelier ontwikkelde. Honderden foto’s werden vanaf de glasplaatjes afgedrukt. De hele regio Venray/Horst heeft een schat aan oude foto’s aan Bertje van Rhee te danken. Achter op elke foto plaatste hij zijn stempel.
